Gunflint Lodge
On the Gunflint Trail, Grand Marais, Minnesota Dog sledding at Gunflint goes all the way back to 1928 when
Justine Kerfoot learned to mush her first dog team. Now 4 full-time mushers and 30 sled
dogs are ready to take you out on hour long, ½ day and full day adventure trips from the
lodge. Two people ride in the sled pulled by a team of 8 to 10 huskies, while your
personal musher directs the operation from the back of the sled. Special trails have been
created just for dog sledding which lead you into the heavy forest, across beaver ponds,
and sometimes down along the Canadian side of Gunflint Lake. The day long trips include a
lunch cookup in the woods, and you often have an opportunity to try your hand at mushing
the dogs yourself for a bit. Various mushing packages are offered that include: a
"Musher Training Week", a "Best of the North" package and a
"Mushing Adventure Week". The mushing season at Gunflint runs from early
December to early April. |
